SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Senior guard Emily Hubley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) would drain the game-winning three-pointer with 1:34 left in the game to cap a 15-4 contest closing run and it proved to be the final three points of the game to give visiting Washington College a 52-50 win over host Swarthmore in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game at Tarble Pavilion on Monday evening. The Shorewomen, who have won two in a row, improve to 7-13 overall and 3-10 in the Centennial, while the Garnet fall to 7-12 and 3-10 respectively.
Washington, who trailed by as many as nine at 46-37 with 7:34 left, led 49-48 with 2:26 left following a lay-in by freshman forward/guard Raley Hinton (Kensington, Md./St. John's College H.S. (D.C.). Swarthmore would recapture the lead, 50-49, with 2:03 left on an Elle Larsen jumper. The Shorewomen would respond with 1:34 to go when Hubley would can a three-pointer to give the guests a 52-50 lead. Swarthmore would have two chances to either tie or retake the lead, but missed both chances. The Garnet's final chance came with five seconds left on a three-point try by Maggie O'Neil, but her shot was off the mark and Hubley got the rebound and was able to run out the clock to give Washington the victory.
The Shorewomen came out strong scoring the game's first eight points to lead 8-0 with 17:14 left in the first half on a three-pointer by Hubley. Washington would push its lead to 25-12 with 5:54 to go in the first on a layup by freshman forward/center Katherine Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora). Swarthmore would respond however with a 13-3 run to close out the half and would trail just 28-25 at intermission. A pair of Elle Larsen free throws with 28 seconds to go in the first.
Swarthmore would take its first lead of the game 3:16 into the second half on a Larsen basket, 29-28, as the hosts went on a 21-9 run to open the second half to lead 46-37 with 7:52 remaining on a Jessica Jowdy bunny. Washington would respond with six straight points to trim the lead to 46-43 with 6:46 left on a traditional three-point play by Hinton. Those six points would ignite an 12-2 run that would put the Shorewomen back in front, 49-48, with 2:26 left on a Hinton layup.
Sophomore guard Ali Grundy (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) had a team-best 14 points in the win. Hubley had 11 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range, and Hinton added 10 points. Hubley also had team-highs of seven rebounds and six assists. WC shot 36% from the floor (20-for-55), 42% from three-point land (10-for-24) and 67% from the foul line (2-for-3). The 10 three-pointers were a season-best for the Shorewomen.
Jowdy had a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with a contest-best seven assists for the Garnet. Larsen just missed a double-double with a game-topping 17 points to go with nine rebounds. The Garnet shot 32% from the field (18-for-57), 23% from behind the arc (6-for-26) and 80% from the free throw stripe (8-for-10). Swarthmore held a 43-33 advantage in rebounds in the contest.
The Garnet committed two more turnovers than the Shorewomen, 15-13, with WC outscoring Swarthmore in points off of turnovers, 11-8. WC outscored Swarthmore in bench points, 22-8, while Swarthmore held the advantage in second chance points, 11-8.
The Shorewomen are back in action on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. versus visiting Franklin & Marshall in Centennial play.
