Katie McCarthy, Gettysburg
UPPERCO, Md. – Freshman Katie McCarthy (Westlake, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) captured her first collegiate title at the Stevenson University Spring Invitational held at Piney Branch Golf Club on Monday.
McCarthy, who had logged a pair of runner-up showings this season, won medalist honors for the first time at Stevenson with an 81 on the par-71, 5,801-yard course. She beat Stevenson's Emily Haas and Morgan Wirtz by five strokes.
It wasn't the usual suspects for Gettysburg with just two of the team's top six scorers competing in its third tournament in as many days. Senior Sarah Hansen (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) was the lone Bullet to compete in all three events and finished tied for fourth with an 87 on Monday.
Senior Lynn Hatcher (Easton, Md./St. James School) and junior Caroline McDonald (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) rounded out the lineup. Hatcher tied for 15th at 104, while McDonald posted 109 to tie for 18th.
Gettysburg finished fourth in the team scoring at 381. Stevenson won with 357.
