Umbach Sets Conference Goal Record in 'Berg Win

Steph Umbach, Muhlenberg

Box Score

With the school records safely in tow, Stephanie Umbach is setting her sights higher.

Two games after breaking the Muhlenberg women's lacrosse career points record and one game after setting a new team standard for career goals, the senior midfielder exploded for 14 points on 12 goals and two assists in a 20-15 win at Swarthmore.

Now she can add the following to her already lengthy list of accomplishments:
• The 12 goals broke the Centennial Conference record of 11, set in 1995 and tied in 1998.
• The 12 goals were the most scored by a women's lacrosse player in all three NCAA divisions this season.
• The 14 points tied a CC mark that was set in 1998.
• The 14 points broke the school record of 12 that was set last year and tied by Umbach earlier this year.
• The 12 goals broke the school record of nine, achieved four times previously (once by Umbach earlier this season).
• Umbach also recorded 10 draw controls to record the program's first-ever "double-double" in goals and draw controls.

Offensive fireworks aside, the win was a big one for the Mules (7-5, 3-3), who were defeated in overtime by the Garnet (7-6, 2-4) last year. With three games left in the regular season, Muhlenberg is tied for fourth place in the CC and has beaten both the team it is tied with and the two directly behind in the standings. The Mules' remaining CC opponents are Bryn Mawr (0-7 in the CC) on the road and Dickinson and Ursinus (both 2-4) at home.

Umbach's record evening overshadowed a nine-point effort by junior Casey Armstrong. She scored six goals and added three assists to go over 150 points for her career. The 21 points and 18 goals scored by teammates in the same game were both school records.

Umbach scored two goals in the first 3:08 to help Muhlenberg jump out to a quick 4-0 lead. Swarthmore scored the next three to cut the gap to one but could not keep pace with the Mules' two-headed scoring machine. Umbach scored consecutive goals three times in the first half, and all three times Armstrong netted the next goal. Muhlenberg led 13-7 at the half and 17-9 midway through the second half.

Sophomore Kelsey Nagle dished out four assists for the Mules, and senior Kayleigh Thies scored a pair of goals.
