GRAND LAKE, Colo. – Gettysburg College head women's lacrosse coach Carol Cantele '83 was named the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III Coach of the Year after leading the Bullets to the national title this spring.
 
Cantele was selected the national Coach of the Year for the third time in her career after guiding Gettysburg to another outstanding campaign. The Bullets tied the school record for wins with mark of 21-3 and knocked off eight teams that finished among the top 14 in the final national poll. Gettysburg also defeated two No. 1 teams for the first time in program history.
 
The season culminated with an incredible run to the program's second NCAA title. After a dramatic double-overtime loss to Franklin & Marshall College in the Centennial Conference title game, the Bullets tore through the NCAA Division III bracket, defeating FDU-Florham (13-5), Rhodes College (19-1), Salisbury University (10-2), and Trinity (Conn.) College (8-4) to reach the national title game for the third time.
 
Facing top-ranked College of New Jersey in the championship contest at Roanoke College, Gettysburg rolled out to a 4-1 lead only to fall behind 5-4 with eight minutes remaining. The Bullets persevered and scored the game's final two goals to seal a 6-5 victory.
 
Gettysburg finished fourth in the nation in scoring defense and set a conference standard with a goals against average of 4.79. The offense turned in its best goal total in four years and connected on over 50 percent of its shot attempts. Seven Bullets were named All-Centennial Conference, four were tabbed All-Metro Region, and two received All-America recognition.
 
Cantele, who received the Diane Geppi-Aikens Memorial Award from the IWLCA last November, earned her 400th career victory with Gettysburg's win over Salisbury in the regional championship, becoming just the fourth women's lacrosse coach to reach the mark. She capped the season with a career mark of 402-128 over 29 seasons, including 378-105 in 25 campaigns at Gettysburg.
 
Cantele was named the IWLCA Division III Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2011. In 2006 she guided the Bullets to a record 21 wins and the program's first trip to the national title game. Gettysburg won its first NCAA championship in 2011.
 
Additionally, Cantele was tagged Metro Region Coach of the Year for the ninth time in her career and fifth time in the last eight seasons.
