SWARTHMORE, PA – Last season, when the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team met Swarthmore in the Centennial Conference Championship, the game was decided by penalty kicks. Meg Van de Loo made sure that wouldn't be the case Sunday when she scored in the second overtime to win the game for the Blue Jays and earn the conference's automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Tournament. Hopkins will head to the NCAA Tournament with a 14-4-1 record.
The Goals:
- Swarthmore struck first, scoring in the sixth minute off the foot of Marin McCoy. McCoy's 14th goal of the season was assisted by Emily Telford-Marx.
- The Blue Jays evened the score in the 58th minute when Maryalice McKenna headed in a pass from Hallie Horvath. The Swarthmore goalkeeper appeared to make the save, but was behind the goal line and the game was tied with just over 30 minutes remaining in regulation.
- Van de Loo's heroics came less than two minutes into the second overtime. The junior fired the ball into the upper corner of the net for her 16th goal of the season. Van de Loo was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Inside the Box Score:
- Hopkins outshot the Garnet 18-11 and 6-4 in shots on goal.
- Van de Loo paced the Lady Jays with five shots.
- JHU goalkeeper Clara Aranguren made three saves to win her second game of the weekend.
- Reba Magier made four saves in defeat.
- Swarthmore dropped to 16-2-1 on the season. It was the first time the Garnet lost to a Centennial Conference team all season
- JHU improved to 3-1-1 in games decided in overtime this season.
