• The Short Story: Freshman Riley O’Toole scored two goals – one in each half – to lift Johns Hopkins to a 2-0 victory over SUNY-Geneseo in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays advance to Sunday’s NCAA Quarterfinal, where they will play host Williams.
How it Happened
• In a first half that saw just seven combined shots, the Blue Jays made one of theirs count as O’Toole and senior Bailey Monaco combined to give Hopkins a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
• Monaco played a long ball through to O’Toole, who collected it and moved into the left side of the penalty area before rifling a shot inside the near post for what proved to be the game-winner.
• The 1-0 lead held through halftime with Blue Jay goalie Bess Kitzmiller and her counterpart, Emily Janiszewski, each making two saves in the opening frame.
• The Blue Jays controlled the second half more thoroughly as they outshot Knights 9-2 after intermission.
• The one-goal lead was doubled in the 59th minute when O’Toole controlled the ball on the left side, cut inside and ripped a shot just inside the cross bar to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.
• Geneseo pressed forward as the clock ticked down, but the Blue Jay defense stood tall and Kitzmiller was forced to make just one second-half save to seal the shutout.
What it Means
• The Blue Jays advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the sixth time in program history. All six quarterfinal appearances have come since 2009.
• Johns Hopkins improved to 23-13-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including 21-9-1 in the last 10 years.
• The Blue Jays will meet Williams in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in five years. The Blue Jays topped the Ephs, 2-1, in overtime in the Sweet 16 in 2013, fell a year later, 1-0, in the NCAA Semifinals, and dropped a 2-1 decision last season in the Sweet 16.
