Defending champion McDaniel survived penalty kicks while Swarthmore cruised to victory in the opening round of the Centennial Conference women's soccer tournament on Tuesday.
In Westminster, Md., a rematch of the 2021 CC championship witnessed a little deja vu as the fourth-seeded Green Terror and fifth-seeded Franklin & Marshall played to a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes, leading to a penalty shootout. In the penalty shootout, McDaniel overcame a 2-1 deficit to eventually top the Diplomats 4-3 through six rounds of PKs. Last year's title game was also decided by a penalty shootout. Kiersten Crowley buried what would amount to be the game-winning PK while goalkeeper Grayson Jons made the game-clinching save to send the Green Terror to the semifinals. McDaniel will take on top-seeded Johns Hopkins on Friday at 6 p.m.
In Swarthmore, Pa., third-seeded Swarthmore blanked sixth-seeded Gettysburg 4-0 to advance to Friday's semifinals. Kim Kockenmeister led the way with a pair of first half goals as the Garnet coasted to their first Centennial Tournament victory since 2018. The Garnet will take on second-seeded Dickinson in Friday's semifinals at 7 p.m. in Carlisle.
