WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Nandita Krishnan, Johns Hopkins (So, Chennai, India / Sishya School)
Krishnan lost a total of just nine games in four matches as she helped Johns Hopkins to an unprecedented fifth straight Centennial Conference title. On Saturday, she and freshman Hailey Hogan (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) earned an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Muhlenberg’s Caitie Druker and Sara Sutker. She then beat Sutker, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles as Hopkins won 5-0 over Muhlenberg. On Sunday, she and Hogan beat Washington College’s Jordan Finnegan and Brittany Marshall, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles as the Blue Jays took a 2-1 lead in the title match after doubles. The win was her 20th of the season in doubles, tying the program’s single-season record. Krishnan followed that with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Marshall at No. 2 singles to push the Blue Jays lead to 4-1. That win gave her 22 for the season, breaking the program record.

AROUND THE CONFERENCE - Complete Release #8

Haverford’s season ended Wednesday as the Fords fell to host Muhlenberg College, 5-0, in the opening round of the 2011 Centennial Conference tournament. Haverford dropped each of the three doubles matches to open play, which put the Mules just two singles away from a match victory. The Mules picked up those two singles wins with straight-set victories in first, the No. 5 and then the clincher in the third flight.

Johns Hopkins shutout Muhlenberg Saturday 5-0 in semifinal play, advancing to the Centennial Conference Championship match Sunday against Washington College hosted at Johns Hopkins.  On Sunday, The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team beat visiting Washington College, 5-1, to win an unprecedented fifth straight Centennial Conference title. The Blue Jays improve to 16-2 overall, while the Shorewomen fall to 16-4. Hopkins becomes the first team in conference history to win five consecutive championships.

Muhlenberg defeated Haverford last Wednesday evening in the first round of the Centennial Conference playoffs. The 5-0 shutout by the Mules was its first postseason win since 1991 and advanced them to the Centennial Conference semifinals against top-seeded Johns Hopkins. On Saturday, the Blue Jays were too much for the Mules, ending its hopes of a conference title. Johns Hopkins swept both doubles and singles, concluding Muhlenberg’s season with an overall 10-6 record.  

Homestanding Washington College denied the Swarthmore women's tennis team a return trip to the Centennial Conference Championship match, as the Shorewomen bested the Garnet 5-1 last Saturday afternoon. Swarthmore's lone point of the afternoon came at No. 3 doubles, as Luann Cignavitch (Sr, Charleston, S.C. / Porter-Gaud School) and Kelsey Johnson (So, Titusville, N.J. / Hopewell Valley) defeated Washington College’s Kat Cohen and Bethany Daller 8-5.

Washington College fell to top-seeded host Johns Hopkins 5-1 in the 2011 Centennial Conference Championship. Washington’s lone point came when Amanda Bercovici (So, Hackensack, N.J. / Bergen Tech) and Campbell NcNicol (So, Mill Neck, N.Y. / St. George’s School) rallied from a 6-3 deficit at No. 2 to post a 9-8(9) win over the Blue Jays’ Carolyn Warren and Abby Dwyer.
