LUTHERVILLE, MD - The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team handed Methodist its first loss in more than three months as the Blue Jays beat the Monarchs, 5-0, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Hopkins improves to 17-2 on the season, tying the school single-season record for wins. Methodist finishes the season at 25-2, a program record, and had its 25-match win streak snapped in the loss.
Junior Courtney Boger and freshman Abby Clark quickly put Hopkins on top with an 8-0 win over Laura Baker and Stacey Brooks at third. Freshman Hailey Hogan and sophomore Nandita Krishnan followed with an 8-1 win at first over Kaitlin Flaherty and Katherine Meindl. The final doubles point came down to second in a closely contested match between senior Abby Dwyer and junior Carolyn Warren and Dana Powell and Rachel Purser. The two teams were on serve with the match tied at 4-4 when Dwyer and Warren got the first and only break of serve to take a 5-4 lead. They would go on to win the match 8-6 and send Hopkins into singles play with a 3-0 lead.
Krishnan picked up her second win of the day, beating Meindl, 6-1, 6-0 at second singles to push Hopkins lead to 4-0 in the match. Clark then closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Powell at fifth. With the match decided, the final four singles matches were halted. Krishnan and Boger each picked up their 21st win of the season in doubles, breaking the program record.
Hopkins advances to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the fourth straight year and will face Tufts on Sunday, May 15 at noon.
