Hopkins, Swarthmore Meet for Title

The seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team defeated visiting Haverford, 5-0, in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 17-2 overall and win their 13th straight match as they advance to the conference championship for the seventh straight year. The Fords end their season at 12-7. Sophomore Elaine Baik and junior Abby Clark put Hopkins on top early with an 8-0 win at third doubles over Kristen Andersen and Abigail Healy. Sophomores Shannon Herndon and Stephanie Rettig then defeated Robyn Himelstein and Celia Tong, 8-1, at second. Junior Hailey Hogan and sophomore Sydney Lehman wrapped up doubles play with an 8-3 defeat of Caitlin Gallagher and Alex Ferrara at first. Lehman quickly pushed Hopkins lead to four in the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles over Tong. Hogan then clinched the win and the berth in the title match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ferrara at second.

With a 5-0 win against Dickinson, the Swarthmore College women's tennis team (13-3, 9-1) secured its spot in the Centennial Conference finals for the second year in a row. The victory against the third-seeded Red Devils means the second-seeded Garnet advances to take on the first seed Johns Hopkins tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Baltimore. A strong start was the key for the team's success today, and with a doubles sweep the Garnet gained a 3-0 advantage. Senior Emily Rosenblum and junior Lia Carlson defeated Lavery/Rodgers at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-4. Juniors Katie Samuelson and Brooke Wilkins dominated at No. 2 doubles, giving up only one game to Hedderich/Altholtz. Senior Stephanie Chia and junior Epiphany English won the third point for the team in a tight contest at No. 3 doubles, downing Cantor/Diamond 8-6. Freshman Jackie Lane and Chia earned the two singles points needed for the team victory. Lane cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6, and Chia followed with a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 4.
