ANNAPOLIS, MD – The 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis beat 23rd-ranked Swarthmore, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon to claim its 16th straight Centennial Conference Championship. The Blue Jays improve to 19-3 overall, while the Garnet fall to 15-3.
Hopkins jumped out to a 2-0 lead but Swarthmore grabbed the last doubles point to prevent the sweep. Anjali Devireddy and Christina Huynh picked up the first point of the match when they beat Oviya Kumaran and Spencer Watts, 8-2, at third. Mary Beth Hurley and Emily Javedan then defeated Kathleen Shiffer and Crystal Xu, 8-4, at second. Erica Stutz and Nathalie Williams won a tight 8-6 match at first over Kamila Wong and Jay Xiao and the Blue Jays took a 2-1 lead into singles.
Devireddy pushed Hopkins' 3-1 lead as she beat Kumaran 7-5, 6-2 at fourth singles. Huynh then defeated Lola Diaz 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 at fifth. Junior Ali Bader clinched the championship with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Lara Geib at sixth singles.
Huynh was named the championship MVP after going a combined 4-0 in the championship.
Hopkins earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The bracket is scheduled to be released on Monday, May 1 at 12:00 pm.
Notes: Hopkins' 19 wins are the most since the 2018-19 season when JHU went 19-4.
