Bullets Race Past Blazers

FREDERICK, Md.  – The Gettysburg College volleyball team overcame a slow start to win the final three sets and defeat Hood College 3-1 in a non-conference match Friday night.

Gettysburg (15-1) improved to 13-0 against non-conference foes this fall, but the night didn't start on a positive note. Hood (3-13) jumped out to an early lead in the first set and then held off a rally with a 10-4 run to polish off a 25-20 win.

The Bullets rebounded in a big way with three dominant sets, winning 25-15, 25-13, and 25-11. Gettysburg ran off the final seven points to close the second set and a 13-1 run broke open a close contest in the third. The final set was tied 6-6 before a five-point run highlighted by a kill by freshman Allie Stranick (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) and an ace by sophomore Melissa Tringrali (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane). The Bullets scored seven of the final eight points to finish out the match.

Senior Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) tallied 31 assists, four aces, and a season-high 20 digs. It was Blair's seventh career outing with at least 30 assists and 20 digs.

Senior Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) logged her first double-double of the season with a career-high tying 12 kills and 14 digs. Weikert accounted for three of the team's season-high 14 service aces. Stranick posted 11 kills and three ace, while senior Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) picked up six kills.

Tringali tallied a trio of aces and 13 digs. Sophomore Caroline Sequeira (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) put up 11 digs and classmate Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) totaled five blocks.

Gettysburg resumes its Centennial Conference schedule at home tomorrow against Bryn Mawr College at 1 p.m.
