Seniors Lead Bullets to Victory in Finale

GETTYSBURG, Pa.  – The four seniors on the Gettysburg College volleyball set the tone for a 3-0 victory over Dickinson College in the season finale inside Bream Gym Saturday afternoon.

The four seniors – Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham), Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep), Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), and Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) – followed up the pre-match recognition ceremony by combining for 21 kills, 39 digs, seven aces, and 10 blocks in the victory. Gettysburg (20-8, 5-5 CC) beat Dickinson (9-17, 2-8 CC) 26-24, 25-20, and 25-11 to clinch its first 20-win season since 2006.

The Bullets nearly squandered a seven-point lead in the opening set after the Red Devils rallied to grab a 22-21 advantage. Dickinson held the winning point at 24-23, but a serve into the net handed the ball back to the hosts. Godshalk smacked down an overpass for a kill before teaming up with Blair for a block for the winning tally.

Gettysburg continued to raise its game in the remaining sets, leading by as many as eight in the second set and jumping out to a 16-5 lead in the final set. Blair and Gilbert combined for the opening point in the third with the former diving to the floor to put up a serve that rolled off the net and the latter pushing the ball to the far corner for a kill. Gettysburg's final point of the season involved three of the four seniors as Blair posted the dig, Gilbert the set, and Weikert the victory-clinching kill.

Weikert tied her personal best for the third time this season with a dozen kills. She also added 10 digs and two aces. Godshalk totaled six kills and five blocks, while Blair recorded 28 assists, three aces, 13 digs, and four blocks. Gilbert posted 15 digs and a pair of aces.

Sophomores Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) each posted seven kills and classmate Caroline Sequeira (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) put up a dozen digs.

Jamie Singer led Dickinson with nine kills. Tatiana Lopez added 19 digs.
