2017 Gettysburg Volleyball Season Recap

2017 Gettysburg Volleyball Season Recap

Season Summary
Overall Record: 20-8
Centennial Conference Record/Finish: 5-5/6th

Gettysburg clinched its first 20-win campaign in 11 years this fall. The Bullets started the season on a tear, winning their first 12 matches, including perfect outings at the Battlefield Classic (4-0) and the Rowan Tournament (4-0). Despite a string of ill-timed injuries to key players, the Orange and Blue battled to a 5-5 record in the Centennial Conference and narrowly missed a postseason berth.

Top Team Performance
Battlefield Classic – Sept. 1-2

In the very first match of the season, Gettysburg lost its top returning attacker to a season-ending injury. Instead of giving up, the Bullets stared down adversity and pulled together to claim four impressive victories at the Battlefield Classic. Twice the team dropped the opening set, but in both cases against Arcadia and Gallaudet, the Bullets bounced back for 3-1 wins. Gettysburg also took down Bethany 3-1 and closed the two-day event with a dominating 3-0 sweep over Kenyon. Senior Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) was named to the All-Tournament Team after totaling 138 assists, 45 digs, 11 kills, eight aces, and seven blocks. Freshman Allie Stranick (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) made an impressive collegiate debut with four double-doubles on the way to being named to the All-Tournament squad.

Top Performer
Maddie Weikert '18 – Right-side Hitter

From start-to-finish, the team's most consistent performer and unsung hero was senior Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg). The lone Bullet to start all 28 matches, Weikert established career bests for kills (211), digs (338), assists (25), and aces (19). The senior right-side hitter put down at least five kills in all but three matches and logged double-figure digs in all but nine. She tallied a personal best 24 digs against Catholic and put down a dozen kills three times, including in her final match against Dickinson.

Breakout Performer
Allie Stranick '21 – Outside Hitter

Freshman Allie Stranick established herself as a force early in the season. She recorded double-doubles in each of the first six contests and finished with 11 on the year. Stranick notched double-figure kills 14 times and double-figure digs 15 times. In her second career match, she pounded down 18 kills while putting up 19 digs. An honorable mention all-conference selection, Stranick's 3.4 kills per set was the best by a Gettysburg first-year in 21 years.

By the Numbers

1,000 Wins:  Gettysburg claimed its 1,000th victory as a program on the second day of the regular season. Needing four wins entering the campaign, the Bullets crossed off the milestone at the Battlefield Classic, becoming just the second Centennial Conference team to reach the mark. Since its first varsity season in 1976, Gettysburg has posted a record of 1,016-433-4.

Setter Up: Senior Stephanie Blair wrapped up her career fifth in program history with 3,246 assists. Blair also tallied 1,257 career digs, becoming just one of four Bullet setters to eclipse 3,000 assists and 1,000 digs. She posted 68 double-doubles (assists-digs) in 108 matches.

Can you Dig It: Senior Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) ended her career with 1,403 digs. That total is good enough for sixth on the program's all-time list, while her 3.85 digs per set is the fifth-best average at Gettysburg. Gilbert set a personal standard with 4.69 digs per set this season.

Senior Send-off
Gettysburg's four seniors walked off the court in style with a 3-0 victory over Dickinson in the season finale. The quartet of Stephanie BlairKatherine GilbertLauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), and Maddie Weikertcombined for 21 kills, 39 digs, seven aces and 10 blocks in their final collegiate contest. For their careers, they totaled 1,439 kills, 3,507 assists, 315 aces, 3,481 digs, and 371 blocks while leading the team to 69 victories.

Looking Ahead
Gettysburg loses four major contributors to graduation, including the setter and libero, but an ample supply of talent is set to return. The return of sophomore Francesca Garison from injury combined with the rise of freshman Allie Stranick and sophomore Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) gives the team arguably one of its best offensive lineups in recent memory. Sophomore Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) will return to start in the middle and both sophomores Caroline Sequeira and Melissa Tringali have proven themselves capable of anchoring the defense in the back row.
