Muhlenberg & Hopkins Share Centennial Football Title; Mules Earn NCAA Bid

Muhlenberg and Johns Hopkins both posted convincing victories in Saturday's regular season finales to clinch a share of the 2021 Centennial Conference football championship. The Mules and Blue Jays both completed the conference regular season with 8-1 records and as a result are deemed co-champions.

The Mules earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament via the head-to-head tiebreaker over Hopkins, while JHU will wait for Sunday's selection show at 5:30 p.m. on NCAA.com in hopes of receiving an at-large bid.

In Allentown, Pa., 15th-ranked Muhlenberg clinched its third stragith CC championship with a 55-0 shutout of Moravian. Michael Hnatkowsky completed 17 of 25 passes for 208 yards and five touchdowns while adding a rushing TD to lead the Mules. Hnatkowsky tied a school record for the third time with the six total touchdowns, and he moved into a tie for sixth place on the all-time Division III list with 135 career passing touchdowns.

The Mules' defense allowed only 23 yards (18 of which came on one play) on 12 passing attempts in pitching its third shutout of the season. Moravian converted only one of 10 third-down tries and recorded just five first downs (compared to 30 for the Mules).

In Westminster, Md., 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins jumped to a 27-0 lead less than 11 minutes into Saturday's game at rival McDaniel, pushed the advantage to 41-0 at the half and cruised to a 48-7 victory against the Green Terror to close the regular season.  With the win, the Blue Jays earned a share of their record 15th Centennial Conference title, all of which have come since 2002.

Hopkins must now wait until 5:30 pm on Sunday evening to see if it earns one of the five at-large bids available in the 32-team playoff bracket.
