Luke Schuermann, Johns Hopkins, Defensive Player of the Year

Luke Schuermann, Johns Hopkins, Defensive Player of the Year

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Johns Hopkins' Luke Schuermann repeated as Defensive Player of the Year while teammates Ryan Stevens and Michael Nwosu and the Susquehanna coaching staff also earned major awards to lead the 2022 All-Centennial Conference Football Team.

Schuermann, a junior defensive lineman for the Blue Jays, was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year. Schuermann is the third player in CC history to win multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards, joining Dickinson's Eric Dube (2006-07) and Muhlenberg's Frankie Feaster (2018-19) in that elite club. His honor marks the 10th time a Blue Jays has received the award. Schuermann was once again a force for JHU this season, leading the conference 11 sacks and tackles for a loss (22) while also compiling 6.2 tackles per game. Schuermann and the Hopkins defense held its opponents to 14.9 points per game during the regular season.

Stevens, a graduate student quarterback for the Blue Jays, was named Offensive Player of the Year. Stevens was at or near the top of the conference is most passing categories, leading the CC in efficiency rating (166.4), completion percentage (70.6%), ranking second in touchdowns (32) and third in total passing yards (2,387). It marks the conference-leading 10th Offensive Player of the Year award for Hopkins, and first since 2018.

Nwosu, a freshman offensive lineman for JHU, was named Rookie of the Year. He becomes the third Blue Jay in the last four years to receive the top newcomer award and the first offensive lineman to garner the honor in the 10-year history of the award. Hopkins led the CC in rushing yards per game (224.3) and ranked second in passing yards per game (281.1). The offensive line limited its opponents to just 12 sacks on the year.

The Susquehanna coaching staff was selected by its peers as Coaching Staff of the Year in the inaugural year of the award. Head coach Tom Perkovich and assistants Pat Ruley, Mike Wiand, Shane Gaines, Cole Dixon, Tom Haughey, Malcolm Henry, Tyler Heisey and Tate Schorr were honored after leading the River Hawks to an unbeaten regular season and their first-ever Centennial title.

A total of 32 players were repeat All-Centennial picks, including three who earned spots on the all-star team for the third time. Muhlenberg defensive back John Washington secured first-team honors for the third time in 2022, while Susquehanna offensive lineman Dalton Simpson and kicker Elijah Hoffman received all-conference accolades for the third time in their careers. Washington is the 54th player in the 40-year history of CC football to earn earn first team All-Centennial honors three times.
