Thomas Monn, McDaniel, Wrestler of the Year

Thomas Monn, McDaniel, Wrestler of the Year

LANCASTER, Pa. -- McDaniel freshman Thomas Monn was named both Wrestler of the Year and Rookie of the Year to lead the 2023 All-Centennial Wrestling Team. The Ursinus coaching staff was selected as Coaching Staff of the Year to round out the major awards.

Monn, who owns a perfect 29-0 record after claiming the 149-pound title at last Saturday's Centennial championship, becomes the first wrestler in conference history to win both Wrestler of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. The Wrestler of the Year award was instituted in the CC in 2012, with Rookie of the Year coming one year later in 2013. One freshman had previously been named Wrestler of the Year - Gettysburg's Zach Thomson (165) in 2012. Monn is the third McDaniel wrestler to be named Wrestler of the Year, joining Ryan O'Boyle (2014) and Alvontae Drummond (141) in that elite category. O'Boyle is the only other Green Terror rookie to claim Rookie of the Year honors, which he accomplished in 2013.

The Ursinus coaching staff secured Coaching Staff of the Year in the inaugural year of the award. The award was previously labeled as Coach of the Year. Head coach Joe Jamison, associate head coach Anthony Terlizzi and assistants Pat Curry, Lee Cox, Mike Spaid, Michael Childs and Frankie Krauss helped guide the Bears to their conference-leading 12th overall Centennial title and first since 2014 last Saturday. The Bears also completed a perfect 5-0 mark during the CC dual season and a 10-4 overall dual record.

Seven wrestlers were repeat All-Centennial honorees. Ursinus' Terry Adams (125) is the lone three-time all-star of the group after finishing as the runner-up for the second straight season. Adams was the 125 champion back in 2020. At the conclusion of the championship, Adams was presented with the prestigious Chris Clifford Award, which is given to the senior wrestler with the most career points at CC championships. Throughout his three CC championships, Adams compiled a total of 31 points for the Bears.

Ursinus' Romeo Rodriguez (141) and McDaniel's Alex LaVeck (165) and Michael Bromley (184) were All-CC performers for the second time in their careers, earning first team accolades for the first time after winning their respective weight classes. Johns Hopkins' Brent Lorin (133) and Joe Paul (174) and Merchant Marine's Eddie Pinc (149) also garnered all-conference laurels for the second time.

Champions at the Centennial meet are named first-team All-Centennial, while runners-up receive second team honors. Ursinus still leads all Centennial schools with 60 champions since 1994. Muhlenberg is second (49), followed by McDaniel (48), Stevens (35), Merchant Marine (34), Johns Hopkins (28), Gettysburg (26), Washington and Lee (7), Swarthmore (2) and NYU (1).
