GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Lea
Candelmo (Oakland, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy),
sophomore Caroline
Moyer (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), and senior Haley
Weaver (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) all won a pair
of individual events to lead the Gettysburg College women's
swimming team to a 173-83 Centennial Conference (CC) victory over
Swarthmore College on Senior Day at the Gettysburg College Bullets
Pool Saturday afternoon.
The Bullets (6-2, 4-1 CC) captured 10 of 14 events in their first
home meet since Dec. 6.
Gettysburg's four seniors were honored in a brief ceremony before
the start of the meet.
Candelmo won both the 200-freestyle (1:59.74) and the 500-freestyle
(5:22.89) while Moyer captured the 100-breaststroke (1:07.79) and
the 200-breaststroke (2:28.32) in addition to swimming on the
winning 200-medley relay. Weaver was triumphant in the
100-freestyle (54.71) and the 200-IM (2:14.96), and she also
anchored the medley relay.
The Bullets led from start to finish and outscored the Garnet 42-7
over the first three events. Freshman Kate
Hegwood (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), Moyer, freshman
Savannah
Llewellyn (Plainfield, N.J./Plainfield), and Weaver won
the 200-medley relay in 1:51.64 before sophomore Meredith
Lindblom (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) claimed
the 1,000-freestyle in 11:12.11. The Bullets followed up with a
1-2-3 sweep in the 200-freestyle, with Candelmo leading sophomore
Nicolette
Gibbons (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) (2:01.42) and
Hegwood (2:02.59).
Gettysburg added two more victories before the first break.
Llewellyn captured the 100-backstroke (1:01.55) before Moyer
touched first in the 100-breast as the Bullets' lead ballooned to
79-27.
The Orange and Blue continued to roll after the break and would
finish 1-2 in three of the final four individual events. Weaver
came from behind to claim the 100-free before Hegwood led a 1-2
finish in the 200-backstroke, clocking a 2:13.42. Sophomore Maddie
Tulp (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) took second in
2:14.06.
Gettysburg also placed first and second in the 200-breaststroke,
with Moyer leading senior Gwen
Houck (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College) to a
runner-up time of 2:41.33. Candelmo edged out Gibbons
(5:24.29) in the 500-free, and in the next-to-last event of the
meet Weaver cruised to a victory in 2:14.96, with Tulp placing
second in 2:19.44.
Gettysburg competes in its final home dual meet of the season on
Wednesday, when it takes on Dickinson College in another Centennial
Conference event starting at 7 p.m. The Bullets and Red Devils will
