Bears Ride Record Swims to Golden Ram Crown

Margaret Leitz, Ursinus

Records fell seemingly by the event when the Ursinus College women's swimming team took part in the two-day Golden Ram Classic at West Chester University this weekend. When the dust – or water – settled, the Bears had emerged victorious against the host Golden Rams and Albright and broken three Centennial Conference benchmarks – and a host of school ones – in the process. Ursinus led the pack with 885 points, with West Chester recording 734 and Albright 207.

The 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Peyten Lyons (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra), sophomore Olivia Tierney (Broomall, Pa./Villa Maria), freshman Clara Baker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington), and senior Corinne Capodanno (Claymont, Del./Padua Academy) kicked off the meet with a bang, establishing a new conference record with a time of 1:47.67, a full 1.34 seconds ahead of West Chester's runner-up contingent.

Sophomore Margaret Leitz (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) made history in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in a school-record 57.09. One heat later, Baker etched her name into program lore, setting a new standard with a national B-cut clocking of 55.86. Sophomore Katherine Porter (Sayre, Pa./Sayre) finished fourth in 58.08.

One event later, Lyons accomplished another historic feat, touching the wall in 56.60 in the 100-yard backstroke to break a conference mark that had stood since 2004.

Ursinus made more history on the first event Saturday, as Peyten Lyons, Tierney, Baker, and Capodanno recorded a Centennial Conference-record time of 3:53.20 in the 400-yard medley relay. Peyten Lyons followed with a second-place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:10.41), and Micaela Lyons wound up third in the 50-yard freestyle, followed closely by Capodanno and Hemp.

Leitz proceeded to notch a program record in the 200-yard butterfly, with her time of 2:06.49 also qualifying as a national B-cut. Baker touched in 2:07.44, also a B-cut and under the previous team mark, and Porter was fourth.
