Missy Leonard, Ursinus, Swimmer of the Year

Missy Leonard, Ursinus, Swimmer of the Year

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Ursinus' Missy Leonard and Swarthmore's Elle Anthony received the top athlete honors to lead the 2023 All-Centennial Women's Swimming Team. Leonard was selected as the Swimmer of the Year and Anthony collected Rookie of the Year laurels. The Swarthmore coaching staff was also named Coaching Staff of the Year to round out the major awards.

Leonard adds to her list of accolades this season after also being named the Most Outstanding Performer at the championship meet. The junior distance freestyler won all three of her individual events at the CC championship - the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyles. After being named the Most Outstanding Rookie in 2022, Leonard secured repeat golds in each event this winter. Leonard's times from the championship each rank among the top-20 on the national performance list and among the top-seven in conference history (200-2nd all-time; 500-4th all-time; 1650-7th all-time). Her 500 freestyle time of 1:51.04 set a new championship meet record.

Anthony was named Rookie of the Year following a record-breaking regular season and championship meet. The Garnet first-year standout set a new conference and championship meet record in the 100 freestyle, won the 50 freestyle and contributed to winning 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle relays along with a silver-medal finish in the 200 medley relay. The 200 and 400 freestyle relays both set championship records, with Anthony leading off the 200 and anchoring the 400. In addition to her record 100 free time, her 50 time ranks second in CC history. Anthony's 100 free time also ranks 17th nationally while her 50 free time is 22nd. During the regular season, Anthony was undefeated in the 50 and 100 free at dual meets, helping the Garnet to a perfect 8-0 dual record, including a 7-0 mark in CC duals.

The Swarthmore coaching staff was selected by their peers as Coaching Staff of the Year in the inaugural year of the award. Prior to this season, this award was labeled as Coach of the Year. This marks the first time since the award was instituted in 2010 that Swarthmore received it. Head coach Karin Colby and assistants Sam Davy, Mabel Fowler, Mike PaceLeisha Shaffer and Charlie Kennedy led the Garnet to their second-straight CC crown and a perfect 8-0 dual record throughout the season. The Garnet are ranked 15th in the nation by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).

Gold medalists at the CC championship earn first team All-Centennial honors and silver medalists earn second team All-Centennial honors in both individual events and relays. Individual bronze medalists are named All-Centennial honorable mention. Swarthmore led the All-Centennial team with 15 swimmers honored, including nine on the first team. Gettysburg was second with nine All-CC performers, while Ursinus (4), Dickinson (2) and Franklin & Marshall (2) also placed multiple swimmer on the all-star squad.
